The construction had started in 1967 and the mosque opened to the service in 1987 by the Turkish Religious Foundation which completed the construction.

In the lower parts of the mosque, constructed on a 4500 m² field, there are one conference hall, parking lot, commerce house and administrative units. The main part of the Kocatepe Mosque, constructed according to the technique of the architecture style developed by Sinan the Architect, is composed of one central dome and 4 half domes sitting on the elephant leg columns. Mosque has 4 minarets with height of 88 m. The minaret balconies can be reached by elevator or by steps.the writings in the mosque were performed by Hamit Aytaç and Mahmut Öncü, and the writings in the conference hall were performed by Emin Barın. The designs of the rugs inside the mosque is prepared according to the rugs inside the Afyon Ulucamii. The shandelier, the minbar, the mihrap, doors, chines and the marbles were designed specially for the mosque and built with elaboration. For the interior decoration, clasical Ottoman architecture was taken as example, and chine, marble, yellow metal, golden lamina, and special paintings are used in the mosque...
