The construction date of Ankara castle, built on a commanding height of city, and in time became the city symbol, is not known exactly. It is known that castle existed during the reign of Galatians 2 B.C. Later castle was repaired during the Roman reign. Castle is composed of two sections as bailey and citadel, and the walls of the citadel probably were repaired during the Byzantium era in 7th Century. Later, during the Arab attacks castle distorted and was repaired by Byzantiums again in 9th century. The exact time the outer walls constructed is not determined yet. Castle were taken by Seljuks in 1703, and later by crusaders in 1101. Seljuks took control of castle again in 1227. During this reign and later Ottoman reign, castle saw minor repairements, and strengthened with the latest restoration not long ago.
From the 20 tower bailey, which covered a very large area, very few survived until today. The towers at the bailey are rectangular shape, and bailey has two doors. The doors are Bailey Door at the west, and Fortress Door at the south. On the Fortress Door there is a scripture dated back to 1330, to the Ilkhanids era. Citadel part demonstrates roughly a rectangular shape and was constructed with partly Ankara stone, and partly with miscellanous material.Citadel is composed of 42 towers, of which heights vary between 14m and 16m. The towers are in pentagon shape. On the northwest face of the Citadel walls there is a scripture from Seljuks era. The highest height of the castle is the Akkale on the north side of the structure, which has the elavation from the sea level of 978 m...
